WCS works to implement eco-friendly practices and promote awareness of climate change impacts. Our initiatives encourage sustainable development to protect natural ecosystems and reduce carbon footprints.
In practice, most of this work is embedded inside the livelihood projects rather than run separately — which is deliberate. When the women of the Gauribidanur papad cluster were cooking rice dough over firewood, that was simultaneously a climate problem, a health problem and a product quality problem. Replacing it with solar-powered equipment through SELCO solved all three at once. A climate intervention that also raises income is one the community will maintain after we leave.
The same logic drives our circular economy work. Fish processing waste at Udupi was a pollution problem for the community and a disposal cost for the industry; converting it into fish meal, oil and powder for poultry and prawn feed turned it into a second income stream for the fisherwomen already handling it.

The Gauribidanur Women-Led Papad Cluster
An 18-year-old women's papad enterprise was producing beside an open drain, losing a fifth of its raw material to aluminium vessels, and supplying Bangalore brands who repackaged the product under their own labels. This is what fixing that looks like.
