Our largest body of work. We build rural livelihoods through an entrepreneurship lens — skilling people, upgrading their technology, and organising them into MSME clusters that can hold their own in the market.
WCS is committed to building sustainable futures, and is dedicated to empowering rural and underserved communities by focusing on four connected things: livelihood, skilling, rural development and women empowerment. We work to create meaningful, sustainable change that lifts both individuals and entire communities — fostering resilience, economic growth and social equality.
The organising idea is entrepreneurship. Rather than treating a village producer as a recipient of training, we treat her as the owner of a business that is under-capitalised, under-equipped and cut off from its market. That reframing changes what the intervention looks like: shared production infrastructure instead of a workshop certificate, a raw material bank instead of a subsidy, branding and market linkage instead of a stall at one exhibition.
This is also where the great majority of our women empowerment work sits. Most rural women in Karnataka are engaged in agriculture as daily wage earners or small landholders, and many enterprising women hold SHG membership — but most SHGs remain confined to micro-finance. They are the strongest candidates to run MSME activity within their own villages, and our job is to make that step possible.
