Sustainable Agriculture & Food Security
Promoting farming practices that raise yields and incomes without exhausting the land, so that food security today does not come at the cost of the next generation.
By promoting sustainable farming techniques, WCS helps ensure food security for local populations while preserving the environment for future generations. The two goals are not in tension: the practices that keep soil productive over decades are the same ones that keep a farming household solvent.
Most of our agriculture work runs through value addition. A grape grower selling fresh fruit is exposed to every swing in the daily rate; the same grower inside a raisin processing cluster sells a product with shelf life into a wider market. A maize farmer selling grain captures a fraction of what a maize value-addition unit captures. Moving producers one step up the chain is the single most reliable way we have found to raise farm incomes.
Alongside this we run farmer education programmes on digital literacy at Village Panchayat level, so that farmers can check current commodity prices themselves rather than relying on what a middleman tells them.

From Grape Growers to a Raisin Processing Cluster
Grape growers in Vijayapura were selling fresh fruit into a volatile market. Organising them into a raisin processing cluster moved them up the value chain, into a product with shelf life and a wider buyer base.
